Skin & Lesion Treatments
Removal of Skin Lesions
While reasons for removal may differ, the techniques and recovery often follow a similar pathway
What are Skin Lesions?
Skin lesions are growths found on or just below the skin. Common examples include:
Moles
Benign skin lesions.
Skin tags
Epidermoid cysts / pilar cysts.
Lipomas (benign fatty lumps)
Skin cancer lesions
Scar revision
Why Consider Removal?
Reasons for removal can vary, from medical to cosmetic or practical.
Relief from pain, discomfort, or irritation.
Prevention of lesions catching on clothing or shaving.
Cosmetic reasons, to improve appearance or confidence.
Medical necessity, for suspicious or cancerous growths.
Improving or reshaping an existing scar.
How the Procedure Works
Most skin lesion removals are performed under local anaesthetic as a day case procedure. The area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and the lesion is carefully excised:
Moles can be cut out in an oval shape to ensure neat switching and complete removal, or they can be shaved off with the hope of a better scar, but chance of regrowth.
Skin tags are excised.
Cysts are removed using an oval incision that allows the entire cyst and capsule to be taken out, helping reduce recurrence.
Lipomas (benign fatty lumps) are usually simply excised.
Skin cancer lesions are excised with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue for safety.
Scar revision involves re-cutting and reshaping the scar tissue to improve its appearance or function.
Recovery & Aftercare
Day case surgery with follow-up in the dressing clinic as appropriate.
Over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol, is usually sufficient to manage any discomfort.
All dressings should be kept clean and dry until review.
Risks & Limitations
Skin lesion removal is a safe procedure, but like any surgery, it carries some risks. Possible complications include pain, bleeding, infection, scarring, or wound breakdown. Specific risks include recurrence of lipomas or cysts, which may occasionally require further surgery.
