Labial Reduction (Labiaplasty)

What is Labial Reduction?

Labial reduction, also known as labiaplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape or reduce the size of the labia minora (the inner folds of skin around the vagina opening). It can also be performed on the labia majora (the outer folds that surround the labia minora). Labiaplasty specifically addresses the appearance and comfort of the labial tissue.

Why Consider Labiaplasty?

Some people choose labiaplasty to:

  • Reduce discomfort or pain during exercise, sexual activity, or when wearing tight clothing.

  • Address changes in shape, size, or symmetry after childbirth.

  • Boost self-confidence with a more balanced appearance.

How the Procedure Works

Labiaplasty is usually performed as a day case under local or general anaesthesia and typically takes 1 hour.

Labia minora techniques

The wedge technique removes a triangular section of tissue from the centre of the labia, preserving the natural outer edge while reducing size.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Most patients return home the same day, with antibiotic ointment to be applied twice daily.

  • Swelling, bruising, and tenderness should be expected in the first few weeks, with the most discomfort in the first few days. Pain medication, cold compresses, and wearing loose clothing can help ease recovery.

  • Light activities and desk-based work are usually possible within 1 - 2 weeks, but strenuous exercise, cycling, and sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4 - 6 weeks until healing is confirmed.

  • Most swelling settles by two weeks.

Risks & Limitations

Like any surgical procedure, labiaplasty carries some risk of complications. These include bleeding, infection, pain or discomfort during recovery, and scarring (though scars are usually hidden in natural folds). Specific risks of labiaplasty include:

  • Changes in sensation - temporary numbness, tingling, or heightened sensitivity (rarely permanent).

  • Asymmetry - labia may heal differently on each side.

  • Over- or under-correction - too much or too little tissue removed.

  • Poor wound healing or wound reopening.

Results are usually permanent, but ageing, pregnancy, or hormonal changes may alter the labia again over time.
