Eyelid Reshaping (Blepharoplasty)

What is Eyelid Reshaping?

As we age, the skin around the eyes can lose elasticity, causing excessive upper lid skin, puffy bags beneath the eyes, or a tired appearance. In some cases, excess skin may even affect vision. Fat around the eye can protrude, causing lower eyelid bags. Eyelid reshaping, also known as blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and fat to create a fresher, more alert appearance.

Why Consider Eyelid Reshaping?

  • Reduce puffiness and eye bags.

  • Smooth out heavy or sagging eyelids.

  • Improve vision if excess skin obstructs sight.

  • Restore a younger, more awake appearance.

In some patients, genetic factors can cause eye bags to appear at a younger age, and blepharoplasty can help.

How the Procedure Works:

  • Upper eyelids: Incisions are made along the natural crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and fat.

  • Lower eyelids: Incisions are placed just below the lash line or inside the eyelid (transconjunctival technique) to reduce bags and remove fat.

  • The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on what is required.

  • Fine stitches are used and typically removed within 5 days.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Expect some swelling and bruising for the first 1 - 2 weeks.

  • Cold compresses and keeping your head elevated will help reduce swelling.

  • Most patients return to normal activities after 1 - 2 weeks, with scars fading to nearly invisible over time.

  • Makeup can usually be worn after stitches are removed.

Risks & Limitations

Eyelid surgery is generally very safe, but as with any procedure, there are potential risks:

  • Temporary swelling, bruising, watery eyes, or tightness.

  • Small cysts along the incision line (usually harmless and easily removed).

  • Rarely, bleeding (haematoma) or infection may occur.

  • Exceptionally rare risk of vision problems / blindness (1 in 20,000).

Ear Pinning (Pinnaplasty)

What is Ear Pinning?

Approximately 1 - 2% of people in the UK feel their ears are too prominent. This is often inherited and can affect one or both ears. Children and adults with prominent ears are sometimes teased, which can lead to a loss of confidence. Ear Pinning (or Pinnaplasty) is a surgical procedure that reshapes the ears so they sit closer to the head.

Why Consider Ear Pinning?

  • Reduce the prominence of the ears for a more natural appearance.

  • Improve self-confidence, especially in children and teenagers.

  • Correct asymmetry if one ear sticks out more than the other.

How the Procedure Works:

  • The surgery is carried out through an incision behind the ear, leaving a fine scar hidden in the crease.

  • Cartilage is reshaped to create the natural folds and bring the ear closer to the side of the head.

  • The operation is usually performed under local anaesthetic, though children may require a general anaesthetic.

  • In some cases, if the earlobe is especially large, a minor reduction procedure may also be carried out.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • A protective garment is usually worn for 10 days until stitches are removed.

  • After the sutures are removed, the garment is worn at night for at least 3 weeks to protect the ears from trauma

  • The ears need to be protected from trauma for 3 months

  • Ears may feel tender for several weeks. Pain relief such as paracetamol is often sufficient.

  • Patients can usually wash their hair once the dressing is removed and stitches are out.

Risks & Limitations

  • Scarring is typically minimal and well hidden, but in rare cases scars can become red or lumpy.

  • A small number of patients may need a minor adjustment if results are not symmetrical.

  • For children, the best outcomes are achieved when the patient is old enough (usually 5 years or older) to understand and cooperate with aftercare.

  • Surgery can also be carried out in teenage years or adulthood with a high satisfaction rate.

Split Earlobe Repair (Lobuloplasty)

What is Split Earlobe Repair?

Split earlobe repair is a minor cosmetic surgical procedure that corrects torn, stretched, or split earlobes. Performed under local anaesthesia in an outpatient setting, it restores symmetry and appearance.

Why Consider Split Earlobe Repair?

  • Restore the natural shape and balance of the earlobes.

  • Repair damage from earrings, gauges, or accidental repairs.

  • Enable you to safely re-piece after healing.

  • It is recommended that only lightweight earrings be worn after reconstruction to reduce the risk of recurrence.

How the Procedure Works:

The procedure is conducted under local anaesthesia, ensuring comfort while staying awake. Scar or stretched tissue is removed, and the edges of the earlobes are refreshed. The new edges are then sutured together for optimal healing. The procedure typically takes 15 - 60 minutes, depending on the damage and whether one or both earlobes are repaired.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Same-day discharge. You’ll go home shortly after the procedure.

  • Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness are common and fade over a few days.

  • Sutures are removed in about 7 - 14 days, depending on whether they’re dissolvable.

  • Most people return to non-strenuous activities the next day.

  • Avoid heavy earrings or pressure on the lobe during healing.

  • Re-piercing is typically safe after 3 months, depending on healing.

Risks & Limitations

As with any surgical procedure, split earlobe repair carries some risks. Complications are uncommon, but it’s important to be aware of them when deciding on the treatment:

  • Scarring - a fine scar will remain at the repair site. These usually fade over time, but in some cases can be more noticeable or thicker.

  • Infection – rare, but possible. If this occurs, antibiotics may be needed.

  • Asymmetry or irregular contour – the earlobes may not heal to be perfectly symmetrical.

  • Recurrence – the earlobe can split again if heavy earrings are worn too soon or if the lobe is injured.

  • Altered sensation – temporary numbness or tingling around the lobe may happen, though this usually settles as healing progresses.

  • Healing limitations – while the repair improves shape and function, it may not restore the lobe to its exact pre-injury appearance.
